Plant quarantine is defined as a restriction imposed by duly constituted authorities on the production, movement, and existence of plants or plant materials, animals or animal products, or any other article or material, or normal human activity, in order to prevent or limit the introduction or spread of a pest, or to control a pest that has already been introduced, or to avoid losses that would otherwise occur.

What is a catamaran ?
Catamaran is the most basic type of fishing craft made up of a few curved pieces of wood put together to make a floating raft, such as those found along India’s east coast. The Orissa type, Andhra type, Coromandal type, and Kanyakumari type of catamarans are all common in Indian waters.
How farmers feed lactating cows ?
Dairy cattle should be fed in such a way that there is minimal nutrient waste and optimum milk production returns. Protein supplements such as oil cakes, energy sources such as cereal grains (maize, jowar), tapioca chips, and laxative feeds such as brans (rice bran, wheat bran, gramme husk) are commonly utilised in a concentrate mixture. A mineral mixture containing all main and trace elements should be introduced at a concentration of 2%.
What is Nutriseed Pack Technology ?
The Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, TNAU, Coimbatore, created Nutriseed Pack Technology, a revolutionary way of crop production. Each plant can be established using Nutriseed Pack technology by placing a Nutriseed Pack in soil. Seed is on top with manure in the middle, and encapsulated fertiliser is at the bottom of the Nutriseed Pack. Nutriseed Pack supports each plant in the root zone in terms of optimal nutrient delivery, biological activity, and so enables plants to utilise nutrients to their maximum potential. With Nutriseed Packs, there is no waste of fertiliser nutrients.
What is genetic purity of seed ?
The amount of contamination by seeds or genetic material from other types or species is referred to as genetic purity. The purity of the seed planted determines the genetic purity of every commercial agricultural product propagated by seed. The success of hybrid seed production is dependent on the genetic purity of parental lines. Genetic purity tests are critical tools for seed producers and plant breeders.
Will any fungus forms mycorrhizae ?
Many fungi create mycorrhizal relationships with plants, while many plants form mycorrhizal associations with other plants. These interactions appear to be specific to plants and fungi. Not all mycorrhizal fungi are compatible with all plants. There have been studies that suggest that being infected with the “wrong” fungus reduces the plant’s health and vigour.
What are mycorrhizae?
The associations between roots and fungi are called mycorrhizae. Plant roots provide a welcoming environment for fungus to anchor and develop their threads (hyphae). The fungi rely on the nutrients provided by the roots to flourish. In exchange, the enormous quantity of fungal hyphae works as a root system for the plants, allowing them to obtain more water and nutrients from the surrounding soil. This is particularly important in uptake of phosphorus, one of the major nutrients required by plants.
Why organic food is expensive ?
In comparison to demand, organic food supply is restricted. Organic food production expenses are often higher due to higher labour inputs per unit of output. Post-harvest handling of relatively small quantities of organic goods results in greater expenses, notably for processing and shipping. Organic products have a somewhat inefficient marketing and distribution network, and expenses are greater due to small volumes. As the demand for organic food and products grows, technical advancements and economic efficiency are becoming more important.
What is plant senescence ?
The process of ageing in plants is known as plant senescence. Stress-induced and age-related developmental ageing affect plants. The essential role of leaf senescence is to recycle nutrients, primarily nitrogen, to the plant’s growth and storage organs. Plants, unlike animals, constantly create new organs, and older organs go through a highly regulated senescence process to maximize nutrient outflow.
What is grafting in plants ?
Grafting is a union of two related plants referred as stock & scion. The Stock or a Rootstock is wild, natural, vigorous, healthy, disease free, & the one with well-developed rooting system. The Scion is a high-quality, superior variety that possesses commercially &/or aesthetically desirable characters. In an ideal graft, roots & central main stem belong to stock, whereas all the growing branches, leaves, flowers & fruits belong to the scion.
